Word From the Minister 5/8/24

Dear Ones,

On May 6th, CVUU had its 94th anniversary, and this coming Sunday, May 12th, the Unitarian Universalist Association, which was created from the merger of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America, is celebrating its 63rd Anniversary! What a lot to be celebrating in this month! And to mark the time between those dates, we are making a special effort to celebrate and uplift our Unitarian Universalism values. Each day, Rev. Mark and I are having a conversation about one of the values identified in the proposed revision to Article II of the Unitarian Universalist Association’s bylaws during something we are calling “The Reverends’ Reveries.” We started with Pluralism, and we will end with Love. You can find our ruminations on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. We want to hear what YOU have to say about each of these values, so don’t forget to comment!

The proposed revision to Article II says that love “is the power that holds us together and is at the center of our shared values.” What kind of love is that? And does love really have the power to bind a group of disparate people like we Unitarian Universalists? This coming Sunday, we will give some thought to what this kind of love might mean to us.

The Unitarian Universalist Association’s General Assembly (GA) will be taking place from June 20th to June 23rd, and this year it is 100% virtual! GA is where the business of the UUA takes place, and this year, the most important business will be the vote on the proposed revisions to Article II of the bylaws of the UUA. As a member congregation of the UUA, CVUU is entitled to have delegates present to participate in this significant decision. If you would like to represent CVUU and be one of our delegates, please email me at minister@c-vuu.org.

This month, we will be giving away 50% of what we receive in our Sunday offering plate to Divine Inspiration Outreach (DIO). DIO is an organization in Chesapeake serving single women in crisis, ages 18 to 65. These women are past the emergency shelter phase and getting ready for supportive housing. The women’s Divine Inspiration houses are given help to overcome trauma and supported with life skills and boundaries training, budgeting and saving skills, and employment help. The goal is to enable them to reach their highest level of self-sufficiency in the community. To learn more about DIO, visit their website at https://divineio.org/.

Don’t forget the Joe Jencks concert on June 8th! It should be a wonderful evening. Mark your calendars. I hope to see many of you there.

The sermon this week is titled “Love Will Keep Us Together,” so I will close this week with Ange Fandoh’s cover of the Captain and Tennille song of the same name.

In peace and love,

Rev. Viola
