Public Stands

As a liberal religious congregation, CVUU has not shied away from taking a stand on social issues that affect our community. And, like many UU congregations, we have formalized this process by taking any resolution we adopt to our congregation first.

The following are public stands that were voted on and supported by a majority of our members:

Passed June 12, 2022
Medical Aid in Dying Resolution

Therefore, be it resolved that we, the members of the Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalists, affirm that how one dies is the last great personal decision an individual will make. Terminally ill Virginians should have access to the full range of medical options at the end of life, including medical aid in dying.
Medical aid in dying allows terminally ill adults to request and receive a prescription for medication they may use to peacefully end suffering at the end of life. To qualify, one must be mentally capable, able to self-ingest the medication and have a prognosis of six months or less to live.
Terminally ill Virginians should have control over their own end-of-life care decisions. Too many people suffer needlessly, endure unrelenting pain, or resort to violent means at the end of life when medical aid could help them die peacefully and on their own terms.
The medical practice of aid in dying is in keeping with our UU principles of justice, equity and compassion. It respects each individual’s search for their own truth and honors each individual’s ability to decide what brings worth and dignity to their life.

Passed October 2019
Gun Violence Resolution

We, the members of Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalists, believe that gun violence is a serious problem in our community and our country and that our elected representatives must take stronger actions to prevent future acts of gun violence. In particular, we support measures to ban military-style weapons, high-capacity magazines, bump stocks, and silencers, to limit frequent handgun purchases, to require thorough background checks for all gun purchases, and to remove guns from the hands of people identified as a risk to self or others and/or those who have demonstrated domestic violence or the threat thereof.
Only by enacting reasonable and sane laws that limit gun access and use can we protect ourselves from the increasing threat of gun violence.

Passed October 2019
ERA Resolution

Therefore, be it resolved that we, the members of Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalists, affirm that sex discrimination is a persistent social injustice afflicting our community and our country and that the Equal Rights Amendment is an appropriate remedy for this problem. We call on the Virginia General Assembly to ratify the ERA to the U.S. Constitution during the 2020 legislative session.

Passed October 2017
Transgender in the Military Resolution

“The Unitarian Church of Norfolk/ Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalists condemns any policy that restricts, in any way, the ability of any person to serve in any capacity in the United States military because of sexual orientation or gender identity.”
