Board Bits from 2/16/23

The  CVUU Board of Directors met on Thursday, February  16th, 2023, via Zoom. Board meeting minutes are typically available upon request from the CVUU Board Secretary or the Congregational Administrator ( Susie Gullixson) approximately 30 days after the date of the Board meeting. The Board meets every month, either via Zoom or in person. The meeting is usually on the third Thursday of each month at 7 pm. The meeting is open to congregants to observe. Congregants who want to present items to the Board must notify CVUU Board President Steve Ciganek before the meeting, so they can be included on the agenda. The following is a synopsis of pertinent items. The next Board meeting will be on March 16, 2023.

REV VIOLA: On March 5th, CVUU will be hosting a Community Conversation with playwright Michon Boston who wrote the play Iola’s Letter: The Memphis Crusade of Ida B. Wells. The play can be seen this month at the Little Theater of Norfolk. CVUU is also in the stages of renewing our Welcoming Congregation status with the UUA, originally acquired at UCN in 2009.

The Life Span Faith Development committee has met and has created a job description approved by the Board.

Treasurer’s Report:  Jan was a great month.  Our building expenditures are up due to increased activity at CVUU

The Board approved two additional nominees, Nikkie Lucier, and Andy Bedinger, to the Nominating Committee, who will begin the time-sensitive work to select names for an upcoming congregational vote.

Tidewater Cluster:  March 11th, 2023.   The last date to register is March 2nd. Still many ways to volunteer!!!!

Safety Committee:  Ken Saucer is assisting with training congregants interested in serving on the Safety Committee.  They will include ushers and Greeters once it is solidified.

Stewardship: Currently, the Board and Finance Committee is in the process of making Stewardship year-long with regular testimonies and events.

Bouquets:

A. Marketing and Rental Task Force for deep marketing research and developing a rental/marketing and Event Coordinator plan that supports our CVUU Strategic Plan Objectives to include  Susan Stephens and her wonderful energy in getting us on the path.

B. Volunteers that are organizing and working on Fabulous First Friday.   Way to go!!

C. Peggy Pickford and her amazing work on the Ushers and Greeters.

D. Ryan Smiley for stepping up for the A/V Tech crew!   It is so appreciated!

E. Doug Throup: all day and every day!!!!   From donning a hazmat suit to facilitating Sexton training.

F.  Barbara Gelzer, Doug Throup, and all the Building and Grounds volunteers for their work that resulted in CVUU receiving the River Star award from Elizabeth River Now.  The  Natural Areas workgroup, Grounds and Landscaping volunteers, and many other volunteers have done so much work on the CVUU campus to clear invasive plants, plant native plants, and work to combat erosion. The Elizabeth River Project has been advising CVUU since 2016 – before we actually moved into the building.   Bravo!!!!

G. Hats off to Alexander Thompson and Kerry Kilburn for revitalizing Social Justice.   We appreciate you all!
