Board Bits 1/3/24

The CVUU Board of Directors met on Thursday, December 21, 2023, via Zoom. Board meeting minutes are typically available upon request from the CVUU Board Secretary or the Congregational Administrator (Susie Gullixson) approximately 30 days after the date of the Board meeting. The Board meets every month, either via Zoom or in person. The meeting is usually on the third Thursday of each month at 7 pm. The meeting is open to congregants to observe. Congregational members who want to present items to the Board must notify CVUU Board President David Kidd prior to the meeting so they can be included on the agenda. The following is a synopsis of pertinent items. The next Board meeting will be January 18th, 2024, unless the Board is able to satisfy the agenda at their retreat on January 6, 2024, and would, therefore, reconvene on February 15. 2024.

Reverend Viola: The safety concerns on Dec 10, 2023, were addressed in detail with the Safety Committee and the Board. This will continue to evolve with further discussions. Read with the Rev had several participants, and out of that may come collaboration to create a congregational covenant.

Reverend Mark: We have 36 children registered in RE, averaging between 18- 22 on any given Sunday. A beginner’s art class led by Lynda Simmons is scheduled to begin in January.

Ed Welp – Finance Committee

Board Votes:
1. Several safety measures were discussed, and one was enacted. The Board made a motion and vote of approval to have Ushers and Greeters lock the doors of the building five minutes after worship had begun. This is the recommendation of the Safety Committee and those who participated in the Religious Institutions Safety and Security Academy run by the Virginia Beach Police Department.

2. Bek Wheeler, UUFP President, requested support to get an amendment on the agenda for GA 2024 for Equity Value requires 15 congregations to show support either through Board action or general membership meeting. It proposes a change from “ We declare that every person has the right to flourish with inherent dignity and worthiness” to “ We declare that every person is inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity, love, and compassion.” : The Board voted to support the proposed amendment changes to be brought forth to the GA agenda for discussion.
