Join us at 11 AM on Sunday, Jan. 19th, for “Organizing Tips for the New Year” with CVUU members Lee Ellen Knight and Princess Perry.

We will focus on Fannie Lou Hamer, whose life and work have some lessons to teach us about navigating threatening social and political times.

Lee Ellen is a master lecturer of Women’s and Gender Studies at Old Dominion University. Among her courses are Women, the Environment, and Climate Change. She also serves as a faculty sponsor of ODU’s Environmental Justice Club. She is currently part of the All We Can Save Workshops, a national cohort of higher education faculty working to increase knowledge and activism on climate justice among college students.

Lee Ellen is a 30-year member of CVUU who has served on and chaired numerous committees.  She co-led the Pledge to End Racism workshops and is currently helping coordinate our worship services.

Princess Joy L. Perry earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Old Dominion University, where she is currently a master lecturer of composition, literature, and creative writing. Her short stories have appeared in Kweli (pronounced kway lee) Journal, African American Review, Harrington Gay Men’s Literary Quarterly, and All About Skin: Short Fiction by Women of Color.

Currently, her work explores the ways enslaved African Americans resisted and undermined the systematic inhumanity of American slavery. Princess is also a proud Returned Peace Corps “Panama” Volunteer. Her debut novel, This Here Is Love, is forthcoming from W.W. Norton in August 2025.

The theme for January is Story.
