Being a member of CVUU is a journey of connection and growth, and the more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it. Your time, energy, and commitment are what make our congregation a vibrant and thriving community. Here’s how you can deepen your involvement and enrich your membership experience.

Participate in Our Congregational Life

Our community is built on shared experiences. Attending Sunday services and congregational meetings is essential. By showing up, you become an active part of the fabric of our fellowship. Your presence and voice give life to the very reason you decided to join us.

Cultivate Your Spiritual Path

We believe each of us can discover religious truth in our own lives and within our community. Your spiritual journey is your own, and we are here to support you. We encourage you to take responsibility for your own spiritual well-being, knowing the congregation is a source of strength and guidance.

Be a Steward of Our Community

To sustain CVUU for future generations, we need everyone’s help. Your talents and interests—your hands, hearts, and minds—are invaluable. This means sharing the work, helping with tasks, and joining committees. We cannot achieve our mission without your active involvement. Taking care of our congregation also means contributing financially. CVUU’s work is funded primarily by the generosity of our members. Making an annual financial pledge allows the Board of Trustees to create a responsible budget, ensuring we can continue to serve our community and beyond.

Serve Others

Unitarian Universalism is a faith of action. We show what we believe through our service to others. Whether it’s through our congregation’s social justice initiatives or acts of caring in your daily life, reaching out to others is a vital part of being in a faith community.

Connect to the Wider UU Movement

Your membership connects you to a larger, national community. You will receive the UU World magazine and are encouraged to attend Unitarian Universalist conferences, workshops, and the denomination’s annual meeting to deepen your understanding and connection to our shared faith.

Honor and Celebrate Diversity

Our CVUU community is committed to celebrating diversity in all its forms. We strive to be a welcoming and inclusive place for people of all ages, races, sexual orientations, gender identities, abilities, and classes.

The Benefits of Your CVUU Membership

Choosing to become a member of the Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalists means you are now part of a vibrant and compassionate community. Here are some of the benefits that come with your membership.

A Supportive Community

As a member, you’re not just a face in the crowd—you are part of a growing, living institution. Our community thrives on mutual support and nurturing, where we explore, learn, and grow together. We are here to support and comfort you during life’s transitions. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the office if you or your family need support.

Opportunities for Growth

You can expect a variety of social, educational, and spiritual opportunities at our church. These are wonderful ways to deepen friendships and grow in self-understanding. You will be challenged to explore beyond simple “religious sound bites,” to deepen your spirituality, and to be supported in your search for a meaningful faith.

Faith Formation for All Ages

If you have children or youth, you can expect an environment that supports them on their own spiritual journeys. Our dedicated children’s and youth programs are designed to help them ask big questions and find their own path. For adults, we offer many forums and classes to help you explore a wide range of topics and expand your knowledge.

Radical Acceptance

At CVUU, you will find a home with other free-thinking religious people who value freedom, reason, and tolerance. We support you as you explore and practice your own spiritual beliefs within the framework of our shared principles. We are an official Welcoming Congregation, committed to celebrating and affirming all LGBTQ+ persons. Our congregation proudly made this commitment in 1999, after a deep and thoughtful process of study and reflection.
