Homeless Shelter on the Move

Volunteers needed ASAP!

Shelter for the homeless in Norfolk is again on the move, and volunteers are needed on Wednesday, October 13 from 9 am to 8 pm.

More than 30 years ago, our Unitarian Church of Norfolk began the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST). Always operated by volunteers, NEST spread to many area churches and synagogues until the COVID virus moved the shelter to Norfolk’s First Presbyterian Church and then to the former Greyhound Bus Station.

The volunteer tradition continues with the newest move to The New Center on Tidewater Drive. Volunteers are needed to work until 8 pm Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 1050 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk (old Budget Inn Motel). It is located just north of Virginia Beach Blvd. on Tidewater Drive. Both light and heavy-duty assignments are available.

The City of Norfolk has contracted with The Urban Renewal  Center (URC) as the non-profit agency that will manage The New Center.  Rachael Cropper has been named director and Kristen Hern de Lepper has been hired as its Volunteer Coordinator. URC began managing Norfolk’s homeless sheltering at the Greyhound Bus Station in May 2021 to meet Covid mandates.

Another opportunity to volunteer is on Thursday, Oct. 14 at The Greyhound Center (701 Monticello Avenue, Norfolk) to help pack up and clean the Greyhound Bus Station. Again, volunteers can work light to heavy-duty tasks from helping to pack up snacks and office supplies to cleaning.
