From the Minister 5/4/22

Dear Ones,

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! The covenant for the Unitarian Church of Norfolk was signed on May 6th, 1930. So, although we have undergone a name change, CVUU is 92 this week! That is a great reason to celebrate and an even better reason to think about a possible centennial celebration, which is only eight years away!

Our worship theme for the Month of May is Nurturing Beauty. Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher who lived in the 1600s, once said, “In difficult times, carry something beautiful in your heart.”  Right now, we are in particularly difficult times. Recent news reports about the draft Supreme Court decision affecting women’s rights hits hard for all of us who acknowledge the inherent worth and dignity of all people and the values of justice, equity and compassion, important Unitarian Universalist values reflected in our principles. Yes, we need to do all that we can to make sure that the principles of democracy, freedom and individual rights are upheld, but we also need to make sure that we hold onto what is beautiful to make it through. What is beautiful in your life that gives you strength?

Starting May 15th, once each month, the Membership Committee will be hosting a Welcome Table Coffee Hour in the foyer after the service. This will be a time for first-time guests and long-time visitors to come and ask questions about CVUU and about Unitarian Universalism. If you are a member of CVUU and would like to help, please send an email to our Congregational Administrator, Susie Gullixson at

And speaking of membership, we will be having new member classes on June 4th and 11th, and a New Member service on June 19th. If you are interested in becoming a member, and we haven’t already had a chance to talk, I invite you to schedule a time to speak with me at this link

I hope that all of you can attend the installation which celebrates our covenant together as Minister and Congregation. It will be on May 21st at 2:00 PM. It promises to be an afternoon filled with celebration, music, food, and the gathering of new and old friends. Here is a link to the invitation:

Thank you to Kevin St. George, who has been working hard to make sure that CVUU is represented at PrideFest this year. We will have a table at the event that we will be sharing with the UU congregations in Newport News and Williamsburg. He has done a lot of the work, but there is still more to do. If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community, or an ally, and would like to help, please contact him at

We have not made our stewardship goal, but there is still time to make a difference and let us know what you intend on giving for the upcoming church year. You can make your financial pledge here:

The General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association will be taking place from June 22nd to June 26th, 2022, in Portland, OR. It will also be multi-platform, so people can participate virtually. CVUU needs delegates to represent the church in the business meetings where decisions are made about the future of the denomination. These delegates will also report back to the church on what has taken place. If you think you might like to provide this valuable service to CVUU and have the opportunity to meet and hear about Unitarian Universalists from all over, please send me an email at To find out more about this year’s General Assembly, visit this link,

We are having difficulty finding enough volunteers to help run our multi-platform worship service on Sunday. You don’t need any special skill, and whatever you think you don’t know but need to know, we will teach you. Please drop me at email if you would like to help.

The Check-In and Chat is tomorrow at 12:00. Come, bring your lunch and let’s spend some time together in good conversation!

And in celebration of CVUU’s 92nd anniversary, I will close with this feel-good song, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” by Justin Timberlake.

In peace and love,

Rev. Viola
