In 2021, President Joe Biden signed into law a bill making Juneteenth, the 11th Federal Holiday.

Juneteenth acknowledges 246 years  in which  Africans and their descents were deemed as “chattel slaves” in America  and served the country as free laborers. It is estimated that some 10 million people of African Descent were enslaved between 1619 and 1865.

When the 117th U.S. Congress, in a bi-partisan vote, enacted and President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law- Juneteenth became the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983.
