Today is the last day of March, which means tomorrow is a special day. Not because it is April Fools’ Day, but because it is the start of a new monthly theme for our worship, religious education programming and small groups, Becoming.
There has been much in the news about anti-Asian violence, and the actions taken by the legislature and the governor of Georgia to suppress the vote. What does that tell us about who we are as a people? But, remember, becoming is not a destination, it is a process. We are always in a state of becoming and so is everyone else. The people that we meet, the places that we go and the things that we do always have an impact on us that inform our becoming, even if we do not acknowledge or realize it. And, likewise, what WE do can have an impact on others and the world. Witnessing injustice is not an opportunity for despair, it is an opportunity for engagement and action. The Unitarian Universalist Association has issued statements about anti-Asian violence and the recent attack on voting here https://www.uua.org/pressroom/press-releases/antiasian-violence and here https://www.uua.org/pressroom/press-releases/condemns-attacks-democracy.
Today is also the International Transgender Day of Visibility, a day on which we acknowledge the accomplishment of transgender and gender non-conforming people. For more information and resources, check out GLSEN’s website at https://www.glsen.org/activity/transgender-day-visibility
The end of March means that our Stewardship Campaign is officially coming to a close. But that does not mean that you can’t still pledge. If you haven’t pledged already, please go to this link: https://tinyurl.com/CVUU-Pledge.
Next week I will be taking some vacation time. So, if a pastoral care issue comes up that you need to talk about, if you cannot wait until my return, someone from our wonderful Lay Pastoral Care Team will be available. You can reach them by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, or you may call the office at 757-627-5371.
CVUU still needs delegates for the virtual General Assembly (GA) of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) which is taking place from June 23rd to June 27th. If you are interested in being one of our delegates, please email me at email@example.com. But, whether or not you are a delegate, this is a wonderful event to attend. If you are attending, I’m available to have a virtual lunch and dinner with you at some point during the week. And if you are a delegate, lunch and dinner are on me!
My Check-In and Chat is still being held on Thursdays at 11 a.m. in Zoom. Click here to join or enter the Zoom meeting information (Meeting ID: 870 1011 9918 and Passcode: 4430). But there will be no Chat next week on April 8th.
As we think about “becoming” this month, we cannot forget that it necessarily involves change, individually and collectively. And here is a song from Christina Aguilera with precisely that title, “Change.”
In peace and love,
