Dear Ones,

Gloria Steinem once said, “Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.” Every moment gives us the opportunity to start over, to see new possibilities. Where our imagination can take us is only limited by what we are willing to do to make what we imagine a reality.

Starting over does not necessarily mean that everything that has gone before can or should be forgotten or forgiven. But starting over — getting a “do-over” — really presents us with a chance to make things better with the lessons that we have learned.  We can bring about the change we want to see in the world. This is particularly important for us to remember now, individually, and as a nation.

One of the changes needed is the abolition of the death penalty.  This is in line with our Unitarian Universalist values. Working toward this goal, for CVUU, is a logical extension of our efforts in adopting the 8th Principle, which affirms and promotes journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions. Our Social Justice Committee is working on a Public Stand to address this, but, in the interim write to your legislators to let them know your position on this vitally important issue.

Please join me for the Check-In and Chat that will take place every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. in Zoom.  The Meeting ID is 870 1011 9918, and the passcode is 2428.  If you do not use Zoom, you can participate by telephone by calling (646) 876-9923 and use the same Meeting ID and passcode. Even if you cannot make the Check-In and Chat, if you want to speak with me about anything, you can call me on my cell, which is (518) 290-0820, or you can set up an appointment with me through my Calendly page which is here: https://calendly.com/viola-abbitt.

There will be a Reflection on the worship theme, Imagination, on the fourth Sunday, January 24th, at 2 p.m. The meeting ID is 818 4816 2503 and the passcode is 1234.  It will be repeated on Monday evening, January 25th at 6 p.m.  The meeting ID for the Reflection on Monday is 846 9322 2490 and the passcode will be the same, 1234. If you cannot make one, you can make the other.

It is abundantly clear that these are challenging times, but our imagination can get us through. Let’s hear Jackson Browne tell us more about that in “About My Imagination.”

In peace and love,

Rev. Viola
