Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team is a coalition of caring people, churches, synagogues and community groups offering emergency overnight shelter to men and women during the winter months. We are an all-volunteer organization supported by private donations.
Providing love, warmth, and support for our area homeless has been the goal of NEST since it was founded by our congregation, then the Unitarian Church of Norfolk, in 1992. This community-wide program keeps hundreds of people in need safely indoors and fed. CVUU is just one of more than 30 local sites.

The coalition operates these temporary overnight shelters on a rotating basis from November to April.

Jan. 23-29, 2019 is CVUU’s week to host NEST. Planning has started and volunteer opportunities are plentiful. We can’t do it without YOU!

If you are interested in volunteering for NEST, contact Julie Hurst, 757-620-7991, or email: [email protected]. We need folks to serve as a bus stop helpers in Norfolk, or as a CVUU hosts, dinner providers & servers, overnight helpers, and early AM volunteers to cook/serve breakfast or help with clean up.

We are also in need of gently used winter clothing: socks, underwear (new only), sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets and sweatpants, (all adult sizes, clean and ready for immediate use). Hand towels and Washcloths. Individually wrapped snack items such as:  peanut butter crackers, trail mix, fruit cups, granola bars (soft). People can bring things in anytime between now and January 23 and place them in the bin located in the South entrance to the Sanctuary.

NOTE: If your committee is holding an evening meetings during the NEST week, we request that you use the door on the south end of the building (the door closest to kitchen which opens up to the old section of the building) as your entrance and exit. Thank you!
